Many students would welcome the chance to study in beautiful countries like England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Germany or France. But how difficult is it to do that financially? Obviously the reality in part has to do with each student’s personal circumstances. However many applicants who are already considering paying for postgraduate studies are surprised to find just how possible making that move really is.
The first thing to know is that many programmes in the UK and other parts of Europe are recognized here in Ontario and are already approved so that eligible students can apply to OSAP to get help with paying a portion of the tuition fee. There are also a vast number of scholarships available for Canadians who are heading overseas to study internationally. Most universities have scholarships which are specifically geared towards students coming from places such as Canada for example. In most instances, this means at least one thousand pounds off of the total cost of tuition. And of course, your study location can be another factor when assessing the total costs of pursuing your post-grad goals. For example, if funding is not a major concern you may choose to study in London where the cost of living per month is obviously much higher. However, many of the same programs are available in smaller cities and towns where the cost of daily living is much more affordable.
The other thing to keep in mind is that if you are already planning to continue onto postgrad studies, heading overseas in many cases does not add significantly, if at all, to the total cost of education. This is because in most cases, Masters degrees at overseas universities are just one year instead of the two required here in Canada. Law is another example where pursuing a shorter time period of studying is an option. Accelerated law programs at many UK universities take just two years rather than three. Students are required to write a small number of qualifying tests upon their return but are also able to work during this time period and so are earning money, instead of spending it on a third year of tuition. At the same time, they are able to gain valuable career experience rather than spending another year sitting in the classroom.
