This unique postgraduate program in Web Science (MSc) at the University of Southampton examines the impact of the Web on society via a variety of disciplines. This includes exploring the impact on all aspects of human society, from the individual person right through to national and global scales.
This program focuses on two main aspects of the web:
- engineering techniques and technologies that are used to build it
- analytical techniques from economics, psychology, law and sociology that are used to understand how it is changing society
Since its inception, there have been two major developments related to the web: social and collaborative applications, and the semantic web. Students have the opportunity to explore these areas through core modules, web technology and social and collaborative websites.
Students will study web technologies, such as data and knowledge representations, e-business, agents and information system design, in the context of economic theory, legal practice, linguistic analysis and sociological evaluation.
