Studying overseas is a wonderful adventure. If you are applying to places such as the UK, one of the things you will require before you can start your program is a Tier 4 Student Visa. This Visa allows you to be in the country for a short time before (and after) you take your classes, however, you will need to apply for another type of Visa (Tier 2) in order to stay and work in the UK anytime after this time period. Because the Tier 4 Student Visa does not grant permanent residency, some students think it will be a very easy process. Not true. There are several things you need to have in place if you are applying from Canada, in order to have a good chance of your Visa request being granted by the UK Home Office.
Timing of your application is key. You are allowed to begin the application process 3 MONTHS before your classes begin. Many students leave this far too late and end up being worried about making that flight they have booked because the paperwork has not yet arrived. The only option is to pay VERY STEEP upcharges for more immediate service. In some cases, however, even then the necessary documents do not always arrive in time so you are best to start this process the minute you are able to do so.
Canadian students will be asked to prepare the following documents as shown by the link below. Because Canada is a low risk country, you are not always required to provide them along with your application or during your in person Interview, however you MUST HAVE THEM READY, just in case. There have been instances where students have been subsequently asked to provide these regardless of their Canadian status.
Part of the Visa application process requires you to list all of the places you have visited for the last 10 YEARS including location, duration of time, and reason for the trip. Start thinking about this now if you travel frequently. Check your phone, email, calendars, old receipts and anything else which might jog your memory so that you can provide a record of travel which is as accurate as possible.
One very important aspect of applying for your Visa is having the proper documents to show that you have your funding in place so that you can pay for the studies you are about to embark on. Again, be sure to CAREFULLY read and follow the instructions for this as listed on the Tier 4 Student Visa webite. For example, funds CANNOT be listed in your parents name only. If they are lending you the money, your name MUST BE on the account as well. In addition, you need to show that your funds have been in an account at least 28 DAYS PRIOR TO SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION ONLINE. So give yourself time to make these adjustments and meet all of these necessary requirements.
One final bit of advice is to make sure you fill out ALL of the information that is required as completely as possible. Better to include a sentence which is not needed then to leave out a key piece of information which could result in your bid for a Student Visa being rejected.
