The 3 yr (Hons) BN in Nursing at Bangor University is part of the well-respected School of Health Sciences. The program is now open to Canadian applicants for the first time ever. The program is 3 FULL calendar years which makes it slightly longer than many of the programs here at home. In addition, Canadian trained RPN’s can likely complete the program in just two years. After finishing the program candidates are qualifed as nurses in the UK. In order to work back in Canada, graduates must undergo the same process as any other internationally trained nurse.
One very important aspect of the BN Nursing at Bangor is that half of the time is spent in lectures and the other half is spent gaining clinical experience which is necessary for gaining entrance to the job market upon graduation. The extreme competitiveness of nursing programs in provinces such as Ontario means that many excellent nursing candidates are not being accepted for training. The marks required for entrance to the program at Bangor must be strong but are not as high as the requirements in Ontario and many other provinces.
The School of Health Sciences tries to put the voices of students at the heart of everything that happens. Here are some of the ways that they do that:
- Seeking the views of students about their programmes of study, and how their learning is supported
- Using a ‘Let Us Hear What You Think’ strategy to capture students’ experiences
- Taking part in national student surveys and share good practice
- Student Representatives work in partnership with the School to address key issues around the student experience
- A Staff Student Liaison Committee where to regularly review how the School is engaging with students.
These strategies enable working together to provide the best possible environment for learning and the advancement of healthcare.
The School wants to insure that students get the most out of their time at Bangor University. There are a range of student-led societies which provide opportunities to share interests and experiences. The School also actively supports students to attend regional and national conferences and networking events in healthcare. Finally there is collaboration with Student Representatives and the Students’ Union to identify new ways of ensuring a positive experience for students within the School.
