A new program is trying to make use of the many qualifications that Internationally Trained Nurses bring to the province, while at the same time addressing the growing shortage of nurses in Ontario. The program is called Ontario Internationally Educated Nurses Course Consortium and it helps address gaps in training and competency. A total of 45 openings are available each year. The next round of applications is being accepted in May of 2019. The goal of the two year training program is helping IEN’s bridge their qualifications so that they can apply to work as Nurses once they are back in Ontario. Although the lack of nurses is a growing concern as the population ages, the process for IEN’s to qualify for work in Ontario can be fairly complex. This program could help simplify that educational process.
You can find out more about whether you qualify and how to apply here https://rncompetencies.ca/eligibility/
What is also making the shortage critical however, is the difficulty of getting into existing nursing programs here at home in Canada as the process continues to become more highly competitive. The entrance of International Universities into the Canadian market could also help with this problem. For instance, Bangor University in Wales has opened up its 3 yr BN(Hons) Nursing to Canadian students for the first time ever. The program is three FULL calendar years which means it is slightly longer than many Canadian programs. Canadian trained RPN’s can likely complete it in just two years. Half of the course time is spent in lectures and the other half is spent gaining clinical experience. You can find out more about that program here https://www.bangor.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/B741-Adult-Nursing
Addressing these shortages is critical. Figures released in 2018 by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) showed that Ontario has the worst RN-to-population ratio in Canada; only 669 RNs per 100,000 people compared to 828 RNs per 100,000 people across the rest of Canada. The one bright spot is that statistics also show the number of Nurse Practitioners is on the rise with an increase of more than 50%

Can the awareness of your internal body signals such as heartbeat or breathing affect the way you see yourself?
New research by Anglia Ruskin University which was recently published in the journal Body Image suggests that there could be a connection. Making people more aware of their own internal body signals, such as heartbeat or breathing rate, could promote positive body image, according to new research published in the journal Body Image.
Researchers from Anglia Ruskin University studies a group of 646 adults and found that there were statistically significant relationships between people’s awareness of internal signals given out by the body – and body image.
One difference in this work as opposed to previous studies on the subject have tended to recruit small groups of young women. However, this study included both men and women, from the ages of 18 to 76.
The study found that people who can pay attention to internal body signals tended to report higher levels of positive body image.
Lead author Jenny Todd said:
“Our research finds associations between the awareness of internal body signals and measures of body image. This could have implications for promoting positive body image, for example modifying interoceptive awareness through mindfulness-based practices.

The MA SEN/ALN (Autism) course at University of South Wales is unique in Wales. It is the only practice-based study of autism in the region and draws a wide range of students from south Wales and the west of England, as well as international students.
The course will be of interest to professionals working in the field of education, health, social care and the third sector who have contact with children or adults on the autism spectrum.
The MA SEN/ALN (Autism) is designed for those who wish to become an advanced practitioner in autism by acquiring a relevant qualification.
It is also of relevance to newly qualified practitioners who are interested in gaining a specialism in autism, and to those coming from a personal perspective on autism who would like to deepen their knowledge and find out more about current research and relevant theoretical ideas.
Most students who study the part-time autism course already work in this specific field. Our full-time students quickly find work locally within education or the care sector, which offers them opportunities to apply theory to practice.
A Masters degree in Autism is a major boost to a career. Whatever your profession, experience has shown us that success on the course leads to enhanced employment prospects. Parents of children diagnosed with an ASD feel empowered both from their success and the increased insight gained.
A number of students have gone on to present at national and international conferences on an aspect of the autism spectrum. Other students have secured promotion and or employment in organisations that specifically support or educate individuals on the spectrum.
